Our values

Below are the values that underpin the Paul Hamlyn Foundation in how it operates as an independent grant-making foundation. They very much mirror the values of Paul Hamlyn who set up the Foundation in 1987 and who left a substantial sum on his death to enlarge it.

His values were summarised in the motto he chose when given a peerage in 2000 - 'There must be a better way', words which we have adapted in our strapline to describe what we want to achieve - 'Towards a better way'.  That way is towards being a society that is fair, allows people to realise their potential, fights prejudice, encourages and assists participation in and enjoyment of the arts and learning, and understands the importance of the quality of life for all communities.

  • Strategic - wanting to make changes to policy and opinion
  • Enabling - giving opportunities and realising potential
  • Courageous - fighting prejudice and taking risks
  • Focused and flexible - through targeted and open grants schemes
  • Supportive - giving advice to applicants who need help
  • Fair - clear application processes, equality of opportunity
  • Value for money - controlling costs and expecting money to be well used
