Truancy and Exclusion theme

The Advisory Centre for Education (ACE) is a charity which offers information about state education in England and Wales for parents of school age children. Its School Exclusion Helpline, set up in 1997, has proved a particularly valuable service, providing much needed advice and support to parents on how best to address the problem and manage the dialogue with the excluding school.

ACE believes that many children are excluded for inappropriate or relatively minor reasons because they were not able to access the help that was needed. Their work has proven that greater, informed involvement by parents can be beneficial to children and prevent confrontational exchanges between parents, schools and local authorities.

Our grant is enabling ACE to maintain and improve this service.  Last year ACE took close to 3,000 calls on its dedicated exclusion helpline and a further 3,500 calls about exclusion on its general helpline.

The foundation's funding is also enabling the organisation to update its members and trained staff on changing legislation concerning school exclusions.
