Special Initiatives

Special Initiatives are targeted, strategic interventions that PHF runs in order to meet a specific area of need. Each of our UK programmes operates Special Initiatives, though we do not currently have any in India.

Special Initiatives may be grant-based, but are not open to all in the same way as Open Grants. Applications are often invited from specific types or groups of organisations. Our Awards for Artists Special Initiative is the only instance where we directly support individuals rather than organisations.

Applications for Special Initiatives are not handled in the same way as for Open Grants, and cannot be made through our online applications system.

Special Initiatives usually last for several years and generally include preliminary scoping research, a central phase of activity by funded organisations, and a detailed evaluation at the end. It is our aim to share the findings of the research carried out during Special Initiatives, and evaluations into them, as widely as possible.
